Over most of the six centuries of Ottoman rule, astrology and astronomy were combined into a highly respected discipline known as ilm-i nücum — the science of the stars. Practitioners were known as müneccim, a term that covered astronomers, astrologers, and wise men.
Seydi Ibrahim bin Seyyid was the first chief astrologer, appointed during Sultan Bayezid II’s reign from 1481 to 1512. The position of chief astrologer existed until its abolition in 1924. These court astrologers advised sultans on auspicious timing for military campaigns, treaties, weddings, and affairs of state, and worked from timing rooms located at the entrances of major mosques.
Following the founding of the Turkish Republic and the abolition of the chief astrologer position, astrology receded from public life for much of the 20th century. Since the 1990s, the astrological atmosphere in Turkey has become very active again.
