Turkey occupies a unique position in astrological history. Over most of the six centuries of Ottoman rule, astrology and astronomy were combined into a highly respected discipline known as ilm-i nücum — the science of the stars. Practitioners were known as müneccim, a term that covered astronomers, astrologers, and wise men.
Seydi Ibrahim bin Seyyid was the first chief astrologer, appointed during Sultan Bayezid II’s reign from 1481 to 1512. The position of chief astrologer existed until its abolition in 1924. These court astrologers advised sultans on auspicious timing for military campaigns, treaties, weddings, and affairs of state, and worked from timing rooms located at the entrances of major mosques.
Following the founding of the Turkish Republic and the abolition of the chief astrologer position, astrology receded from public life for much of the 20th century. Since the 1990s, the astrological atmosphere in Turkey has become very active again. Interest in both Western and traditional astrological methods has grown steadily, and Turkey has emerged as one of the more internationally connected astrology communities outside Western Europe and North America.
The most prominent figure in contemporary Turkish astrology is Öner Döşer, an internationally recognized astrologer, author, and educator based in Istanbul. Döşer is the founder of AstroArt School of Astrology, School of Astrology Publications, and Astrology Television. Since 2012, he has been organizing an annual International Astrology Days event in Istanbul with the participation of world-renowned astrologers, and has trained more than 4000 students.
AstroArt School of Astrology was founded in 2005 with the purpose of providing internationally approved astrology education and popularizing it throughout Turkey. Its education system blends classical and modern astrology techniques. As of 2016, AstroArt School of Astrology has been on the approved school lists of both APAI and ISAR, with certificate and diploma programs available to students from Turkey and internationally.
Döşer also serves as the Turkey Satellite of the Organization for Professional Astrology (OPA), connecting Turkish practitioners with the broader international professional community.
Western astrology in both its modern and traditional forms is the dominant approach among Turkish practitioners, with a notable emphasis on classical and medieval methods reflecting the Ottoman astrological heritage. There is active work underway to translate and publish ancient Arabic and Ottoman Turkish astrological texts, bringing historical material back into circulation for contemporary practitioners. Vedic astrology also has a presence in Turkey, and the country’s geographic position between East and West is reflected in the range of traditions its practitioners draw on.
