Astrology in Italy

Italy has one of the richest astrological histories of any country in the world. The Italian peninsula was central to the transmission and development of astrology from antiquity through the Renaissance, and that heritage remains visible in contemporary Italian astrological culture.

Client-based astrology became widely practiced and well-documented in Italy from the fifteenth century onward, when it was embraced especially by the northern Italian nobility. Astrology was a highly competitive profession in Renaissance Italy, as princes and popes sought guidance on the most propitious times for marriages, military campaigns, and major undertakings. Figures such as Marsilio Ficino and his patrons the Medici family in Florence were central to this tradition, and Italian courts employed professional astrologers as a matter of course.

Italy’s Renaissance astrologers made lasting contributions to the development of Western astrological technique, and the country’s classical heritage (Roman, Hellenistic, and Renaissance) continues to inform how many Italian practitioners approach their work today. Traditional and classical astrology, including Hellenistic methods and Renaissance techniques, has a particularly strong presence in contemporary Italian practice.

Astrological Organizations

The largest Italian astrologers’ association, the Centro Italiano Discipline Astrologiche (CIDA), was founded on 5 October 1970 in Turin. It currently has around 4,500 members. The primary goal of the association is to promote qualified astrology and astrological research, also in collaboration with other disciplines such as psychology, philosophy, medicine, and psychosomatics. National congresses are held regularly, and the association is organized into 26 regional groups. CIDA also operates a certified training program and maintains a professional register of astrologers who have passed its examinations.

ISAR has an active Italian chapter, and Italy is also a member of the Federazione delle Associazioni Astrologiche dell’Europa del Sud (FAES), a federation of southern European astrological associations.

Traditions and Approaches

Italian astrology today reflects the country’s deep classical roots. Traditional and Hellenistic astrology has a strong following, with numerous schools and practitioners working in the older Western frameworks. Modern psychological astrology is also widely practiced, as is a broader humanistic approach that emphasizes the integration of astrology with philosophy, psychology, and personal development. Vedic astrology has a smaller but active practitioner base in Italy.
