Jim Sher holds a Master of Social Work from the University of Texas (1972) and undertook post-graduate training in Jungian theory and practice. He worked for many years as a therapist and counselor specialising in family and relationship counseling, mental health, drug and alcohol treatment, and domestic violence before integrating astrology into his practice in the late 1970s. In 1998 he became the founding Executive Director of Kepler College in Seattle, the first degree-granting astrology college in the United States. He subsequently founded the Sher Institute of Astrology and Metaphysics in Los Angeles, where he has taught multi-week courses in transpersonal astrology at introductory and advanced levels. His astrological knowledge developed through independent study integrating Jungian psychology, social work theory, and extensive metaphysical traditions including Gurdjieff, Krishnamurti, Sufism, Kabbalah, Gnosticism, Buddhism, Sacred Geometry, and the Golden Dawn. He is the author of Astrology as a Spiritual Path: Birth of the New Human (2025) and writes regularly at sherastrology.com on astrology, metaphysics, and transpersonal themes.
