The Astrological Association (AA) is Britain’s leading astrological organisation, founded in London in 1958 and a registered charity since 2013. Unlike certification bodies, the AA doesn’t examine or certify astrologers; membership is open to anyone interested in astrology. When an astrologer lists the AA, it signals engagement with the professional astrological community, its journals, conferences, and research culture, rather than a tested credential.

The AA grew out of the Astrological Lodge of London and was founded by a generation of influential British astrologers, including John Addey, originator of harmonic theory. Here’s the distinction that matters most for a client: the AA is not a certifying body. There’s no AA exam, no competency test, and no “AA certified astrologer.” Membership is open to anyone with an interest in astrology, professional or not.
That doesn’t make it meaningless; it makes it a different kind of signal. An astrologer who lists the AA is telling you they participate in the professional community: they read and often contribute to its journals, attend its conferences, and work within an environment of peer discussion and shared standards. Long-standing engagement with a serious professional body is a genuine marker of commitment to the craft.
But because membership itself isn’t examined, it reads best alongside other signals: formal training, a tested credential like the ISAR CAP, or a strong body of client reviews. On its own, it says “part of the professional world,” not “tested competence.”
What do AA-listed astrologers actually look like as a group? Data from the Astrodune directory fills in the picture: 43 listed astrologers cite the Astrological Association, and they form a distinctive cohort.
They’re strongly UK-anchored. Around 58% are based in the United Kingdom, with the rest spread across the US, Europe, and Australia, consistent with the AA’s role as Britain’s central astrological organisation.
The psychological tradition runs deep. About 70% of AA-listed astrologers practise psychological astrology, a notably higher share than in the directory overall. That echoes the Association’s own history in the psychological school of British astrology.
They pair membership with formal training. Nearly half trained at the Faculty of Astrological Studies, the classic British pathway, with others coming through the CPA, MISPA, and STA. In other words, an AA listing rarely stands alone; it usually appears alongside a recognised education.
They’re highly experienced. The median experience among AA-listed astrologers on Astrodune is 28 years.

Is the Astrological Association a certification body? No. The AA is a membership organisation and registered charity, and it doesn’t examine or certify astrologers.
